Job Description

Position Title: Electric Vehicle Operations Specialist

Host Organization: NYCSBUS

Primary Work Location: On-site at Greenpoint depot

Travel requirements : As needed to other sites at Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island

Term: 12-month full-time fellowship (40 hrs/week)

Salary: $85k annually + healthcare, transit benefits, and training stipends

Background

NYCSBUS is the country’s premier school bus fleet operator and is leading national efforts to electrify our fleet of 900+ yellow school buses.

NYCSBUS (New York City School Bus Umbrella Services) is a not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have special needs and Individualized Educational Programs.

We operate 800 school bus routes with a staff of approximately 1,800 people across six locations, supported by a budget of $190 million.

NYCSBUS has three goals:

  1. To provide fabulous, safe service.
  2. To innovate in student transportation.
  3. And to provide transparency to school districts and others that work with outside bus contractors like us.

Position Overview

Accelerate equitable electric school bus adoption in disadvantaged NYC communities by blending growth hacking tactics with climate justice principles. This role focuses on underserved neighborhoods that are disproportionately affected by diesel emissions, using a combination of data-driven testing and community-based outreach. Resourceful, mission-driven individuals who want to drive innovation at the intersection of clean energy technology and climate justice are encouraged to apply. This role will report to the Head of Data Science / Analytics within the IT organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • (70%) Technical Execution and Research
  • Assist with site electrification and help supervise site development activities.
  • Assist with commissioning new electric school buses and chargers.
  • Assist in planning activities for procuring new vehicles / chargers.
  • Work with the IT team to understand, document, and standardize processes related to charging operations and automated load management.
  • Research and identify opportunities for the NYCSBUS team to learn from other fleets or EV ecosystems and implement best practices.
  • (20%) Partner Engagement
  • Engage with electrification partners (utility, electrical contractors) to implement site electrification.
  • Develop or present content to raise awareness about school bus electrification.
  • (10%) Reporting & Compliance
  • Documenting your fellowship experience in detail.
  • Track key performance indicators related to all aspects of EV operations

Eligibility

  • This role is open to U.S. citizens only. No visa sponsorship is available.
  • This position is funded by NYS's Climate Justice Fellowship Program (). As a result there are specific eligibility requirements that candidates must meet.

  • Previously incarcerated individuals;
  • 16- to 24-year-olds who are enrolled in or have completed a comprehensive work preparedness training program such as those offered by Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), technical high schools, Conservation Corps, YouthBuild, and AmeriCorps. The training program must include a combination of rigorous clean energy education with hands-on technical training. Eligibility of work preparedness programs under this category will be considered on a case-by-case basis.;

Qualifications/ Experience / Skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a related field
  • Proven ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills
  • Eager to work with a team with a shared mission
  • Grant Writing or related
  • Curiosity about clean energy / infrastructure
  • Partnerships and Program Development
  • Introductory Data analysis (Excel/Google Sheets)
  • Knowledge of electric grid is appreciated
  • Project Management Tools (JIRA, Asana, Monday etc.)
